Christmas Trees & Photosynthesis

Real Christmas trees benefit the environment through the process of photosynthesis. They take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, use the carbon to create the building blocks for growth and release oxygen and water vapor. “One acre of Christmas trees stores approximately 8,000 pounds of carbon,” according to Rebecca Montgomery, an Assistant Professor from the University of Minnesota’s Department of Forest Resources.

In the second segment of this DVD, Professor Montgomery explains the process of photosynthesis using simple graphics. She stands beside a tree with part of its root structure exposed to demonstrate its carbon storage capabilities. In the presence of sunlight, water from the soil is taken up through the roots of the tree. At the same time, carbon dioxide is taken in through tiny holes in the needles. During Photosynthesis, carbon is stored throughtout the tree and oxygen and water vapor are released. For every molecule of carbon removed, a molecule of oxygen is released.

Because they do not lose their needles, Christmas trees can continue this process even in winter.

They Benefit In Other Ways Too!

Real Christmas trees provide excellent habitat for small animals and birds. Their branches help keep the ground warmer in cold weather and cooler in hot. Their roots help stabilize the soil. They prevent soil and water erosion. Real Christmas trees are sustainable and renewable. They are grown on farms, like
wheat or corn. But unlike those crops, a tree grower may wait 10 to 12 years for his crop to mature for sale.

Real Christmas trees are recyclable. After the holidays, they can be chipped for mulch to be used by gardeners for pathways and planting beds. Growers use this mulch to protect the tender roots of young trees.

Real Christmas trees are biodegradable. At some point they decompose and return to the soil. Because many Christmas trees are grown on local farms, they enhance the local economy. Farmers buy equipment and supplies from local
vendors. They provide local jobs, especially for young people. These youth experience the relationship between a farmer, his crop, and his market.

Because many growers also sell their own product, these impressionable youth gain valuable skills dealing with the public. Those lessons remain with them for years after.

If you celebrate the holidays with a Christmas tree, a Real tree is the more responsible choice.
